An insightful musing, Christine. I find myself reminiscing on several levels. Most appropriately is about my son, who is 4. I watch him run and play with abandon more and more every day. He is good at slowing down and drawing trains periodically, but I recognize the kismet gene that we share: Not slowing down enough to take it all in. I can hear my mother's voice when she said recently, "You were always on the run as a boy. Couldn't ever get you to slow down." Perhaps it's more genetic with boys at this age, but what I want to avoid is looking back when my son is 11 and has 8 activities a day after school.

Thanks for writing this book. I look forward to reading it WITH my son and wife. And perhaps re-enacting a scene from Guys and Dolls together afterward (I got the horse right here...).

I, too, hear requests for "free" time. My kids are weary of getting too busy which I think is fantastic. I also learned that the best remedy for "I'm bored" is to find a chore for them...some how they get creative really quickly.
